Although the economic downturn prevented the neighborhood from flourishing, the brewpub was a regional success. “The Village at Glen Mary” community was born and its flagship business would be the Devils Backbone Brewing Company, opening its doors in 2008. With some great friends, the Crandall’s began to further foster the idea of a small, environmentally sensitive, pedestrian-friendly, and community-focused business development. This added water to the original seed and further solidified the idea that there needed to be a brewpub in the Nelson County community the Three Ridges Wilderness area seemed like a perfect place to bring great food and beer to the people. Brewpubs, mountains, skiing, biking, hiking, bird watching and running go together, right? In Europe most small towns have their own pubs that are an important part of the social fabric of the community. More travels throughout the Western United States brought more exposure to craft beer, as the common denominator for most great outdoor destinations was a brewpub… and, there were lots of them. Founders, Steve and Heidi Crandall were on a ski trip and were introduced to a German beer called Weihenstephan. This first real “craft” beer experience started a trend in the Crandall household, planting the seed that slowly grew into an idea, and then bloomed to become Devils Backbone Brewing Company. In the summer, there are “u-pick” farms nearby, a farmers market, Stoney Creek golf resort, local shopping and art as well as plenty of hiking, biking, fishing, and scenic drives.One might say the spark for the idea behind the brewery happened in 1992 with a visit to Cortina, Italy. Located in the heart of Virginia’s winery, brewery and distillery area along Nelson 151. A bath house is located near the primitive area with showers and laundry.

Facilities:Ī 20 acre camp ground with 25 full RV hook up sites, 25 dry RV sites, and 25 primitive tent sites. The Shanty, open Friday & Saturday 3pm-to close, is where we pour rare Devils Backbone beers and a wide selection of aged spirits, with a focus on whiskey. Light, made-to-order breakfast fare and specialty coffee is available in The Summit Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday 7am-12pm. Fast-casual is available outside at the Oak Grill along with beer and wine at the Outdoor Bar. We are dog friendly- dogs must be on a leash in the Meadows. The Brewpub opens daily at 11:30am & we serve brunch on Sundays 11:30am – 2pm. We pour fresh craft beer from our 16 taps and our pub menu specializes in oak wood -fired smoked dishes and local fare. This is our “test kitchen” for recipe development. The pilot brewery is where we craft our recipes on a traditional German designed 10 Hectoliter (8.5 barrel) brewing system.
Basecamp offers a mecca of outdoor activities including bike races, trail run races, and festivals.
